The "73rd Avenue Active Routes to Transit"
Problem
Injuries: 89
Both roads are major arterial-wide streets often used as mini-freeways in East Oakland. 73rd Street's narrow median makes it significantly more dangerous for pedestrians crossing.
Injuries: 58
Fatalities: 3
Diana Govea, a resident on 73rd Avenue, stated that she observes two to three crashes daily at the intersection, indicating ongoing safety issues.
Injuries: 23
This East Oakland intersection, near Seminary Point's retail area, has been upgraded with paved roads, painted crosswalks, and new buffered bike lanes on Bancroft Avenue. However, it has also seen 14 injuries in the past seven years, underscoring ongoing safety concerns.
Oakland's roads, from East Oakland hills to West Oakland's shorelines, are among California's most dangerous. Arterial routes like International Boulevard and Broadway are particularly risky, frequented by commuters and students alike. Despite efforts since 2016 to identify and improve the deadliest intersections, many remain perilous. These roads prioritize cars over pedestrians and cyclists, lacking adequate safety infrastructure, leading to tragic consequences for residents.
